Mission

The Fogarty International Center (FIC) advances the mission of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by supporting and facilitating global health research conducted by U.S. and international investigators, building partnerships between health research institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and training the next generation of scientists to address global health needs.

Interest in Diversity

The FIC supports basic, clinical and applied research and research training for U.S. and foreign investigators working in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). All but one of FIC’s research training and career development programs supports training for scientists from LMICs. FIC does encourage diversity, including the recruitment of LMIC trainees and mentors from diverse backgrounds, persons with disabilities, and women in the funding opportunity announcements for FIC research training programs. However, “diversity” is defined within the context of the individual LMIC and not in the US context.

Director's Statement
I fully support scientific workforce diversity because it supports the NIH mission, and is imperative to optimizing the strength of the NIH research enterprise. At the Fogarty International Center (FIC), Our goal is to create a climate of innovation, opportunity and success within FIC grantee institutions that capitalizes on the cultural, ethnic, and other forms of diversity in our funded workforce in LMICs.
